The effects the different types of ribbons create are endless and you can mix ribbon embroidery with other embroidery techniques like bead embroidery and thread work to result in colorful, raised designs.

Working on ribbon embroidery designs has proved to be, not only a lot of enjoyment; they have contributed to a sense of accomplishment as I watch clients realize the beauty in their commissioned pieces.” Deonne D.

Ribbon Embroidery and Its History.

Ribbon embroidery, the art of sewing with ribbons; is a romantic and textured form of embroidery. Because of its three-dimensional qualities, Instead of a multitude of simple stitches on the fabric, one stitch or two in ribbons can make a flower bud. Add another stitch in green and you have a flower bud with some greenery, and it looks stunningly like the real thing.

Silk ribbon embroidery originated in France in the 16th century and appeared as embellishments on men’s coats and women’s clothes. Also known as Rococo Embroidery, it made its first appearance in England in the early 17th century when London dressmakers began copying the French technique.

In the 1800s, this embroidery progressed from ornamenting clothes to decorating quilts and home décor; shoes, bags, hats, gloves, and parasols. these accessories were considered the luxuries of the wealthy.

Ribbon Embroidery Tools.

The tools needed for ribbon embroidery are similar to the other forms of embroidery with a few differences.

Silk Ribbons, as well as synthetic and satin ribbons, are popular ribbons. In the 21st century, synthetic ribbons like organdy ribbon and metallic ribbons have been added to the many ribbons in a worked pattern.

Needles for ribbon embroidery must have a sharp point and a large eye.

Fabric. Fabrics in natural fibers are easiest to work with and provide a firm base for delicate ribbons; however, pretty much any material is appropriate.

The embroidery hoop is a circular frame that holds the material taut while you work.

Embroidery scissors are small scissors with a turned-up point.

Ribbon Embroidery Stitches

I mentioned early on that in ribbon embroidery the embroidery swaps embroidery thread for ribbons. Well, you change the thread but not the stitches… The stitches remain essentially the same and you use fewer stitches.

While you work, notice the difference between thread and ribbon stitches. The ribbon stitches pop and add an expensive finish to the piece.

Ribbon stitch is the most utilized stitch in ribbon embroidery and is unique to ribbon embroidery.

Tips for Stunning 3D Flowers and Foliage

* Combine ribbon embroidery stitches with other thread and bead embroidery techniques to create pieces that pop.

* A twist in the working ribbon can produce both good and bad effects. So, unless a design calls for it,  try to avoid it whenever possible.

* Avoid jumping from one area of work to another with long lengths of ribbon behind your work. It’s better to end your stitch and begin again in a new location.

* Choose quality ribbons that won’t fray over time.

* Always work ribbon embroidery in a hoop or frame. This will ensure that the material remains taut while you work.

* Use ribbon in short instead of long lengths to minimize wear and tear on the working ribbon. It is better to end your stitch and thread your needle several times in a design than sew with worn-out, frayed, or damaged ribbon.

* Choose the right width of ribbon for the different parts of your project. Thinner ribbons will give a dainty effect and broader ribbons produce a bigger impact.

* Practice! Practice! Practice! Experiment and perfect the techniques.
